What L/100 km tells you

In Canada, fuel consumption is normally shown in litres per 100 kilometres. A vehicle rated at 8.0 L/100 km is expected to use about eight litres to travel 100 kilometres under the conditions represented by that rating. A lower number means less fuel is used for the same distance.

Natural Resources Canada publishes separate city, highway, and combined ratings. The combined figure is useful for broad comparisons, but it is not a promise about your exact fuel use. Temperature, trip length, speed, traffic, idling, tires, payload, towing, elevation, and driving style can all change the result.

A better fuel-cost estimate uses

  • Route distance: actual road kilometres, not straight-line distance.
  • Fuel consumption: a recent real-world average when available.
  • Fuel grade: the grade required or normally used by the vehicle.
  • Local price: a current price from the area where fuel will be purchased.
  • Trip conditions: city, highway, winter, towing, or heavy-load expectations.
  • Separate legs: different routes or conditions calculated independently.

Statistics Canada publishes average retail gasoline prices by geography, but an average is not the price at a particular station. For a near-term trip, a current local station price is usually more relevant. For a long-range budget, test more than one price instead of treating today's amount as permanent.

Do not compare an official highway rating with a winter city average and conclude that one source is wrong. The conditions are different. For purchase research, official ratings provide a common benchmark; for a personal budget, your representative measured average can be more useful.

If consumption rises to 9.5 L/100 km while distance and price stay the same, the annual estimate becomes $2,351.25—about $272 more. That sensitivity is often more useful than presenting one total as certain.

Fuel is only one part of vehicle cost. Financing, insurance, maintenance, tires, parking, tolls, depreciation, and repairs are outside this calculation.

  1. Check the actual route distance and any planned detours.
  2. Choose a consumption figure that fits the route and season.
  3. Use the correct fuel grade and a current price per litre.
  4. Calculate outbound and return legs separately when conditions differ.
  5. Add ferries, tolls, parking, charging, and accommodation outside fuel.
  6. Recalculate if the route, vehicle, fuel price, or passenger split changes.

A passenger split is a budgeting agreement, not a complete measure of vehicle wear or ownership cost.

Is a lower L/100 km number better?

Yes. It means less fuel is used over the same 100-kilometre distance. Compare vehicles under similar test conditions and consider the type of driving you actually do.

Why is my real fuel use higher than the published rating?

Published ratings use standardized testing. Cold weather, short trips, congestion, idling, speed, tires, load, roof racks, towing, terrain, and driving style can raise real use.

Should I use city, highway, or combined consumption?

Use the figure that best matches the trip. For mixed annual driving, combined is a useful starting point; a representative measured average is often better for a personal budget.

Does the calculator include premium fuel automatically?

No. Enter the price of the grade you plan to buy. Confirm the manufacturer's fuel requirement before assuming regular gasoline is appropriate.

Does this method cover electric or plug-in hybrid driving?

It covers liquid fuel. Electricity use, charging losses, rates, and electric-mode distance must be calculated separately for a battery-electric or plug-in hybrid scenario.
